Eligibility for Submissions
Who can submit: Current undergraduate students enrolled at UNC Chapel Hill may submit to UNC JOURney.
What can be submitted: Research papers and abstracts must be the author’s own independent work that was overseen by a faculty mentor at UNC Chapel Hill. UNC JOURney accepts research papers from all fields of study.
Submission Guidelines
Style: Students should adhere to accepted manuals of style when writing their article. Different fields of study utilize different manuals of style, including MLA, APA, Turabian, and many others. Students may choose which to use, and they are highly encouraged to use the manual of style preferred by their particular field of study.
Cover Page: Include the author’s name, class year, major field of study, and the article’s type of research opportunity (SURF project, honors thesis, independent research, etc.). The student’s name and information should be on this cover page only: to facilitate a blind review, identifying information should be kept off pages containing the abstract and the body of the article.
Abstract: All submitted articles must have an abstract of one paragraph—approximately 250 words or fewer.
Key Words: Please provide a list of approximately five keywords in addition to the abstract.
Format: Submit file as .doc or .docx. Include images, figures, graphs, and tables in the document in their proper locations. Submission also requires that these images, figures, graphs, tables, and similar items to be submitted separately as high-quality JPEG files.

Author Rights
Authors who publish in The Undergraduate Research Journal at UNC maintain the right to present their research and ideas in any form, in whole or in part, in any other conference or publication.
Contributors should be aware, however, that many other academic journals and conferences require exclusive rights to published ideas. All copyrights are retained by authors. OUR holds the rights to non-exclusive use in print and electronic formats for all pieces submitted for publication in The Undergraduate Research Journal at UNC. Please carefully review the author agreement for further details.
How Submissions Are Selected
Submissions are reviewed anonymously, and are evaluated with respect to originality, thoroughness, accuracy, consistency, credibility and proper referencing. Once the submission deadline has ended, UNC JOURney will reach out to authors with submission decisions in late March.
